Minions: The Rise of Gru 2022
It broke the Fourth of July weekend box office record ($108.5 million), and both hosts spotted "gentle minions" costumes at their screenings. They also got into a real argument about whether the franchise is secretly a late-capitalism parable about drones who just want a leader. Cast includes Steve Carell, Taraji P. Henson as Belle Bottom, Alan Arkin as Wild Knuckles, plus Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand, and Julie Andrews. Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack has Phoebe Bridgers covering the Carpenters and a minion choir doing "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Both hosts liked it, mostly for the parts with actual minions in them.
